Why a Galil?

Cool factor, not too many around.
I like the fact it's a 5.56 but the beefy-ness of an Ak w/o being a 7.62 (does that make sense?).

Makes perfect sense. A tank that eats NATO 5.56 ammo all day, every day, rain or shine.

I forget why I wanted one but I knew I did. I happened to be eyeing one at a local store every time I went in and one day just said screw it and bought it. I'm happy I did because it's been a hoot to shoot. I just want to do one or two more updates like replacing the night sights and it will be one solid rifle.

I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed that performance is just barely edging out the cool factor in this poll. C'mon guys, this is a Galil not a friggin AR15!

The Galils were right to start with- no "Oh, crap we should have done it this way" scenarios.
The Galil sets next to pretty distinguished company in my book.
FAL, Browning 1919 and .50, Colt .45 and of course the AK.
If you look at what is being used in far away places by guys and gals that depend on their stuff working you'll see the ones above - a lot!
Yes, you'll see the M16 but usually only where the US is trying to buy friends.
The main reason the Israelis went with the M16 was simple economics.
The M16s were free and they had to pay for the Galils, FAL, etc.

My reasons-
1) Way cool factor- i'm the only guy at the range with one.
The AR crowd spends a lot more and hits a lot less than i do.
2) If i run 500 rounds through it and "forget" to clean up it's still going to run
great. Try that with an AR15.
3) Weight isn't an issue- safe/truck, range/truck, back to safe.
Besides, my POF AR with the goodies weighs the same or
more than my ARM.
4) Besides, in an end of the world scenario only 4 things will still be here.

Cockroaches
Twinkies
Galils

Actually these designs are closer to 60 years old for the Galil & 50 for the M16/AR15

I just had the same thought. And I also expected there to be more people who had ancestral ties to Israel.

The Government Model 1911 is approaching it's 100th year, and still the weapon of choice for many modern warriors. I don't see the Galil as outdated by any means.

Yup, and unlike many other weapons, the first Gaili model made was as good as the last and never needed major upgrades, and fixes...a good well designed tool from the onset and still my first choice, much like the "outdated" 1911 is my first choice as a side arm. Neither need a bunch of after market doo-dads, they are simple and effective and work.

Yep; the 7.62's X 51 thru the Galil are the way to go.

Finesse in a small package.

Lots of reasons.

But the one that just keeps on popping back up is that they are just dead sexy rifles. I love how they feel, how they sound, their history, everything... even though the only one I ever owned had more problems than a Chicago mayor.

Another good Galil ownership reason : Israel has for years been attacked time and again by her enemies surrounding the Nation. And the Men and Women of the Israel Defense Force has again and again been victorious and at times using the Galil Rifle. If its good enough for those heroic folks, Its good enough for me. So it's been replaced by Tovars and very low cost M16s, it is likely better than those two put together....

i'm not sure why ancestry is an option. I'm polish, and i don't pick guns based on my heritage. The choice seems a bit.... weird.
